AUDIO SOUNDSCAPE: Anish Kapoor's ArcelorMittal Orbit, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
Client: ArcelorMittal Orbit Visitor Experience, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London
Producer / Sound Designer / Audio Editor
Producer / Sound Designer / Audio Editor
Conceptualisation, sound design and editing of 30 different audio portraits of iconic locations surrounding Anish Kapoor's sculpture the ArcelorMittal Orbit. Each of the 40-second audio loop portraits is played at a different position on the 400-step stairwell; as visitors descend from the Orbit's viewing platform, they walk through a soundscape evocation of locations such as Columbia Road Flower Market, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Mudchute Farm, Whitechapel Bell Foundry and The Olympic Park's Velodrome. The creation of the audio portraits involved custom recording and careful composition of the most evocative sounds captured at each site. The visitor's imagination is inspired to envision key locations that surround the Orbit. The launch of the soundscape coincided with the opening day of the Orbit as a visitor attraction in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The Soundscape received a nomination for Audio Installation of the Year in the 2014 AV Awards. |
The client says: "We were impressed with Pamela’s creativity and her ability to overcome obstacles. Obtaining access to make the recordings and sourcing some of the archival materials were incredibly challenging. But Pamela always seemed to find a way to get the piece we were after. Following the attraction’s re-opening, we conducted a comprehensive review of visitor feedback. The soundscape Pamela created for us was the most consistently mentioned and praised element of the interpretation by far."

PODCAST - COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION WORKSHOP PROJECT: Watford Palace Theatre
Listen to a 4-minute excerpt
from the full podcast below: |
Client: Watford Palace Theatre
Producer / Scriptwriter / Sound Designer / Audio Editor Conceptualization, sound design and editing of a 20-minute podcast, featuring reminiscence (oral history) recordings created as part of a community participation project. The project was linked to the Theatre's production of Elton John's Glasses. In this play, the main character is obsessed with the dramatic loss of the Watford Football Club in the 1984 cup final. Workshop participants recorded their memories of Watford in 1984 for the podcast project, as part of an initiative to promote community involvement with Theatre's productions. Interviews were also conducted with the play's director and the Theatre's Head of Participation. Extracts from these interviews, along with music evoking the era, and archival audio, were combined with the oral history recordings to produce the podcast. The full podcast is available on the Theatre's website. A 3-minute promotional version was also produced.
The community participation project, including the podcast production, was supported by a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant. Pamela has also produced a podcast series celebrating the Theatre's 110th anniversary. |
PODCAST PROJECT DEMO: Past Present Tense
Producer / Interviewer / Scriptwriter / Sound Designer / Audio Editor THE DEMO: The Past Present Tense demo provides an inter-generational exploration of the day-to-day life experience of listening to audio content via the radio or a mobile device.
Tightly edited interview excerpts are carefully interwoven with relevant archival recordings, to enrich and illustrate comments from interviewees. Selections from original interview recordings with individuals ranging in age from 55 – 70 are juxtaposed with comments from two 17-year-olds. The dynamic interplay of the statements brings out both the differences, and similarities between the experience of older and younger generations. Along the way, the interviewee comments raise broader issues, such as the value of shared experiences compared to independent experiences. The rich sound design of the program will appeal to both older and younger listeners. |

Past Present Tense demo below. |
THE PROJECT: Past Present Tense explores how the most basic activities of our everyday lives have changed in just a few generations. Interview content from older and younger generations is interwoven to explore each episode’s topic. The programme reveals differences and also introduces each generation to the perspectives of the other. In that process, we discover some surprising similarities that exist alongside of the generational differences, and examine larger ideas, such as the value of shared experiences and companionship.
The content will be a process of sharing and exchange. The series will bridge communication and understanding between older and younger individuals; it demonstrates to younger generations how interesting the memories of older individuals can be. Inter-generational exploration of topics fosters a harmony and dialogue between older and younger individuals.
More than a third of podcast listeners are under 34, compared to just 6% who are over 55. By interviewing people of an older generation about episode topics, the individuals are participating in the development of podcast content. Participation in content production, and older adult voices being featured in the episodes, can have a positive impact on the individuals’ well-being by reducing social isolation. It can help individuals feel included, rather than disenfranchised, in the context of communication technology.

Interviewees include world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, Walt Disney's daughter Diane Disney Miller and music director Esa-Pekka Salonen. The music featured in the tour was performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra. The tour was launched as part of the grand opening of the Hall. To date, the tour has been enjoyed by over 150,000 visitors. |
The client says: "At the time we were looking for a producer for the creation of an audio tour for Walt Disney Concert Hall, we had several great options to choose from. Thank goodness we went with Pamela and her team. She took a more inventive approach to interviewing, which involved multiple interviewees with diverse backgrounds. The script she devised was written to garner interesting content that made the end product fun, more diverse and entertaining to a broader range of visitors. Getting on the calendars of Frank Gehry, Diane Disney Miller and many other highly creative and extremely busy people was incredibly difficult. Pamela was flexible to accommodate their schedules. She had the brilliant idea, in spite of the limited budget we were working with, to videotape all of the interviews, which allowed us to put together a successful presentation to share in the lobby of the Concert Hall."
